Many Aussies can’t get enough of Miniature Dachshund puppies and their unique, sausage-like appearance. But aside from the way they look, what else is there to love about these dogs? Below is a list of the common traits of this breed that make it a sought-after pet among many households.

    It is very loyal

When it comes to loyalty, the Miniature Dachshund is one of the first canines that usually come to mind. Also referred to as Doxie, Dackel, Hot Dog, and Badger Dog, this breed is devoted to its human from day one.

It will patiently wait for you to come home when you’re gone for hours and follow you from one room to another. It will also sit as close to you as possible whenever you are seated on the couch and make sure to get involved in whatever it is that you are doing. A loving breed, the Miniature Dachshund will always shower you with kisses and snuggle with you every chance it gets.

    It is wonderful with children

As a pack dog, the Mini Dachshund enjoys being a part of a family. It will make a great pet for households with teens and younger children when properly trained and socialised.

Naturally affectionate and friendly, this dog will cuddle with your kids and allow itself to be petted. It will also join in on games like chase and hide and seek. Parental supervision, however, is still needed, as this breed requires gentle handling.

    It will watch over you

Despite its small size, the Miniature Dachshund is a brave dog. This is because it was originally bred to hunt burrow-dwelling animals including badgers, rabbits, and ferrets. It will always be on the lookout for potential danger, causing it to bark at strangers or at other people whom it sees as a threat. It also won’t think twice about fighting bigger dogs because of its natural disposition to be vigilant.

Because the Mini Dachshund likes belonging to a pack, it will treat your family as its new pack. You can expect it to be quite protective of you and your children, making it a great watchdog for your household. It will alert you when it sees or hears anything unusual near your home.

    It is incredibly cute

When it comes to appearance, the Mini Dachshund is unique. There is no other dog that combines a small head, big droopy ears, a long body, and short legs. Even when it is a full-grown adult, this breed retains its cuteness from when still a puppy.

Aside from its one-of-a-kind look, the Mini Dachshund has a goofy personality. It is unpredictably humorous and can turn any dull moment into something fun. It is quirky and silly, so you never know what will come next. In a nutshell, this dog is full of surprises.

    It loves to play

If you are an active person, you will love that the Miniature Dachshund is all about fun and games. This small dog carries a lot of energy, so finding a daily activity for it will not be a problem. Just be sure not to play games that involve jumping, as this elongated dog is prone to spinal conditions.

This dog can run quickly, so a game like fetch will make a great pastime. It also likes to learn new tricks, so you can teach it to walk backwards, shake paws, or go around in circles.

    It is adventurous

The Miniature Dachshund is a high-energy dog that is always game for exciting activities. Coming from the Hound group, it likes going out and exploring different places with its family. This makes it a wonderful companion when it comes to outdoor fun like hiking, fishing, paddle boarding, camping, and swimming.

Because of its small size, the Miniature Dachshund is easy to bring anywhere you go. An amazing travel buddy, it will happily go on long road trips with you and make sure that you and everyone else have an enjoyable time.

    It is generally low maintenance

If you want a dog for a pet but have a hectic schedule, this breed makes an excellent choice. The Mini Dachshund requires only minimal grooming and exercise, so you do not have to spend a lot of time caring for it.

This dog needs to be brushed only once or twice a week, and bathed once every three months. If it has long fur, it only needs to visit the groomer once every four to six weeks. A Mini Dachshund with short fur may only visit every eight to 12 weeks.

When it comes to exercise, this dog requires only a moderate amount. Because of its short legs and long body, it does not need long walks. A walk of just 15 to 20 minutes, split into two, is enough per day.
